Child neglect tops cases settled by CHRAJ in Gomoa in 2004

Apam (C/R), June 15, GNA - Cases of child neglect particularly by fathers, toped the list of cases handled by the Gomoa District Directorate of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in 2004.

Mr John Amoah, District Director of the Commission said of the 97 cases received 87 had been successfully disposed of, adding that, out of the figure 47 involved neglect of child maintenance. Mr Amoah who was speaking to Ghana News Agency in an interview at Apam said refusal of men to accept pregnancy was second with a total number of 23.

He said labour related cases and administrative injustice were also handled.

There were four disputes over child custody and five on inheritance, Mr Amoah said.

The rest were three, land title, three truancy, two trespasses, two child abuses and one failure to maintain spouse. He said the directorate carried out 29 public education campaigns in some communities, second cycle institutions ad churches. Mr Amoah expressed concern about the behaviour of some men towards their children and spouses.

"A child who is not properly cared for has no future", the director said and added that" women should know the calibre of men they move with to make tem to know what is in stock for them and their children in the future".

The District Director reminded parents that, "children are gifts from God and we will account for how we handled them in future".
