A Ghanaian drug smuggler was expelled by China recently after serving a one-year jail term in a Beijing prison.

Kofi Amanfo Tawiah, 40, left Beijing for home aboard a plane last Monday, customs sources said.

The Ghanaian man was detained by Chinese police in August 2000 on suspicion of trafficking drugs to overseas destinations in postage parcels.

He was sentenced in May this year to one year of imprisonment and fined 2,000 yuan by the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court, which also ordered that he be expelled after serving the sentence.
