Accra, April 3, GNA - Mr. Yu Wenzhe, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China on Thursday donated three sets of computers and accessories to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and called for the deepening of socio-economic ties between Ghana and China. He said since independence, there had been closer co-operation in all spheres: political, education, economic and trade and that the ties needed to be strengthened the more to the benefits of the two countries.

Mr Wenzhe said this when he paid a courtesy call to the Ghana News Agency to renew its friendship and also familiarize himself with the activities of the agency.

He said the agency like Xinhua News Agency in China played a vital role in gathering and dissemination of relevant information that enhanced the image of the country.

"The responsibility of the media is very important", he said, adding that, technology had made the world a global village, which therefore made it imperative for the news agency to be current to become the preferred medium of information dissemination. Mr Wenzhe lauded the GNA for its leadership role in news gathering and dissemination, which to some extent had influenced government decisions.

He said the Chinese government together with the government of Ghana had undertaken numerous development projects, including the building of the National theatre and the Bui dam.

Mr Boakye Darkwa Boadi, Supervising Chief Editor of the GNA said the agency sent specific stories to the Xinhua news agency in China to inform the people about activities in Ghana.

He said the agency did not indulge in acts of 'super up bullying', interference in internal affairs of other countries adding, "This is reflected in the Ghana government's policy".

Mr Boadi expressed gratitude to the embassy and said the agency would continue to work to build up the relationship that had been established.

Mr Raymond Ankomah, Business Development Manager, GNA expressed worry over why the embassy had stopped subscription to GNA news bulletin.
