Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Shi Ting Wang, has maintained that the existing bilateral relations between his home country and Ghana under the Akufo-Addo-led administration is one of the most envied on the African continent.
According to him, the over 60-year bilateral relations between China and Ghana has hit its peak under the current administration, particularly in the period of a global pandemic as both countries are committed to focusing on efforts to support each other.
He said the two countries have over the years expanded their diplomatic relations from just trade to several areas including education, health amongst others.
Notable among these is one of the biggest standing deals between Ghana and China, the $2 billion Sinohyro Master Project Support which was agreed between Ghana and China in 2018 to address major infrastructure challenges in the country.
Ambassador Wang said in an interview with Happy FM that, “The relationship between our two countries is at its best. China is the number one trade partners of Ghana. We are also number one in human resource training partners of Ghana. We are committed to Ghana’s development. With these evidences you can see why our relationship is the best’’, he stated.
China, since it began recovering from the coronavirus scourge has made efforts to alleviate the plight of countries around the world including Ghana and some other 17 West African states.
This is evident in their donation of medical supplies which included 3,000 N95 protective face masks for frontline health workers, 10,000 protective face masks for all, 2,500 disposable overalls, 800 Infra-red Thermometers, 2,500 medical goggles, 10,000 single-use gloves and 10,000 disposable shoe covers.
However, several critics have expressed their uncertainty about China’s quick recovery and their several donations in Africa. Some people believe it is but an attempt for the Chinese government to infiltrate and exploit African countries.
But Ambassador Wang dispelled such conspiracy theories and labelled them nonsense.
He said, “It is nonsense to say China is using COVID-19 to gain favour from Africa. Africa has always been there for us and China is there for everyone. China has been there to support Africa from the very beginning. We have supported some parts of Africa gain their liberation from colonial rule and helped with many developmental projects. I think it is nonsense for people to say China is using the virus to seek favour from Africa when we’ve always had a great relationship with the continent.”
