Juaso (Ash), Feb 21, GNA - Mr. Wang Jinghua, the Consular at the Chinese Embassy, has presented 20 sewing machines to Anna Girls and Teenage Mothers Vocational Centre at Juaso in the Asante-Akim South district.

The presentation was made possible through an appeal by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mrs Gifty Ohene Konadu. Presenting the machines last Sunday, Mr Jinghua noted that skill training was the best form of empowerment teenage mothers could access in order to be self-reliant.

He said the ultimate objective of the donation was to render the trainees economically viable at the end of their training and urged them to make maximum use of the machines.

According to the Consular, the gesture formed part of social activities aimed at cementing diplomatic relations between Ghana and the Republic of China over the last 50 years.

He said China would continue to support Ghana in all sectors of its economy to enable it to achieve its development goals and bridge the gap between it and the advanced economies. Mrs. Ohene Konadu reiterated government's policy to empower the private sector to assume roles in creating employment to the masses. The MP said since government alone could not shoulder unemployment rate in the country, there was the need to develop the human resource base of the private sector to complement government's efforts in alleviating poverty, especially in the rural areas. She urged the centre to put the facility to good use and commended the Consular for the kind gesture.

Earlier, the MP led the Consular to the Asankare Youth Leadership Training Institute where Mr Daniel Arhin-Sam, the Principal, called on the Chinese government to assist in expanding the facilities of the institute in order to increase enrolment.

In a related development, the MP presented a cheque of 10 million cedis to the Juaso Secondary/Technical School to cover the fees of 50 brilliant but needy students for one year.

Presenting the cheque, Mrs Ohene Konadu stated that it was the first in a series of scholarships she intended to institute in the district in her quest to improve on the standard of education in the district. She urged the beneficiaries to justify the investment made in them by studying hard to obtain good grades at the end of their three-year courses. Receiving the cheque, Mrs Marylin Djokoto, the Senior Housemistress, expressed gratitude to the MP and urged others to emulate her.
