Christian Council of Ghana against politicisation of development

Tamale, Oct. 4, GNA - The Director of the Northern Sector Office of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has observed that the politicisation of development programmes was undermining efforts at eradicating poverty in the communities.

Mrs Janet A. Mohammed explained that the practice was barring the poor and the vulnerable from the decision-making process.

She raised the concern at a three-day Regional Voter Education Training Facilitator Development Workshop in Tamale on Monday. She said national efforts at alleviating poverty were not benefiting the disabled, women, children and the aged.

The CCG in collaboration with the Bolgatanga-based Centre for Sustainable Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization (NGO), organised the forum for District Directors of National Commission for Civic Education, representatives of NGOs and Journalists. The forum was also aimed at ensuring that parliamentary candidates in Election 2004 addressed key issues on women and people with disabilities in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

Topics discussed included: "General Information on Electoral Processes in Ghana"; "The Rights and Roles of Civil Society Organizations in Election Processes"; "Debates, Awareness and Sensitisation on Gender and People with Disabilities Issues". Mrs Mohammed urged the Government to tackle gender disparity at the national, regional and district levels to sustain development and good governance.

Touching on Election 2004, she urged all the stakeholders to ensure peaceful, transparent and fair polls.
