Christianity not being forced on Muslim students – Vincent College

The Head teacher of the St. Vincent College of Education in the Northern region Dr. Erasmus Mortty has denied claims by Muslims students in the school that they are being forced to attend Christian devotions.

There was tension in the school Wednesday after the Muslims students boycotted what they described as a Christian devotion.

Some of the students who spoke to Starr News said it is against their faith to attend a devotion where only Christian rituals are performed.

“They have been forcing this devotion on us and it is not fair. This is not the first time it is happening. We are Muslims and it will be improper to attend Christian devotions,” one of the angry Muslim students, Abdulai Mamud Damba said.

Speaking on Morning Starr Thursday, Dr. Mortey said the school does not force religion on its students.

“We do not deny our students their right to fellowship or worship. And besides, it was not a devotion, it was a morning assembly….which ends with announcements which pertains to the growth of the school.

The impression that the whole assembly is more of a Christian service is not the case.

“We have met with the various stakeholders and we have a common understanding on how things must be done with our Muslims students.

Initially they protested against the attendance of Mass, so we have exempted them from mass,” he explained.

He denied media reports that the students vandalized school properties during the misunderstanding and urged the media to be circumspect.
