Christians, Muslims must coexist - CPP

On the occasion of the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has said it backs calls by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sherabutu, for peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians, traditionalists, and adherers of other faiths in Ghana “because we are all one people”.

Muslims all over the world are marking the Eid ul-Fitr after a successful completion of the Ramadan fast.

The CPP, in a statement issued by National Chairman Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle, said: “The Convention People’s Party joins our Muslim brothers and sisters to thank Allah for all his blessing and mercies on this auspicious feast of Eid-ul-Fitr. The festival, which marks the completion of an act of duty and devotion throughout the holy month of Ramadan symbolised by the discipline and sacrifice of fasting, should teach us all the moral of fasting against the things that might affect and undermine our peace.

“That Islam is a religion of peace, we in the CPP, in wishing our brothers and sisters the very best of this feast, entreat them to continue to pray for greater peace for Ghana as we all join hands to work to maintain the peace we enjoy before, during, and after the elections.”

The statement added: “We fully support recent calls by the National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sherabutu, for peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians, traditionalists, and adherents of other faiths in Ghana because we are all one people. We urge Muslim youth to shun any politician who would attempt to use them to achieve their ends or to cause mayhem during this year’s November 7 elections.

“In this joyful moment of thanksgiving in appreciation to all that Allah has blessed us with, the CPP wishes all Muslims a very memorable and peaceful Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. It is our hope and prayer that self-discipline, self-restraint, and respect for all will continue to characterise our journey of progress and help us to collectively guard our relative peace and stability, especially as we journey to the November polls.”
