Thirty (30) year-old Louis Kwabena Agyei is in the grip of the Asokwa Divisional Police Command in the Ashanti region for stealing money believed to be collection from the St. Martin De Porres Roman Catholic Church at Atonsu.
The suspect, who was very well dressed, sporting a dark blue shirt over a black pair of trousers with black shoes to match, managed to bypass the security checkpoint because the security man on duty said he mistook him for a congregant and allowed him to pass without questioning.
According to an eyewitness, the suspect headed straight to the residence of the Parish Priest, entered the room of the cook and attempted to bolt with the undisclosed amount of money which was in a sealed envelope .
Some members of the parish who were present at the church premises managed to apprehend the knife-wielding suspect after he scaled the fence wall, upon shouts from the cook who had spotted him sneaking out of her room.
In a video recording obtained by MyNewsGh.Com, the suspect is heard pleading for mercy from the mob that had surrounded him and threatening to beat him.
He told the mob that he stayed at Amakom Roundabout, a suburb of the Kumasi Metropolis and had gone to the parish to see one Father; the reaction of the mob suggested no priest bore that name at the parish.
Unconvinced by his plea for mercy and his excuse, he was handed over to the Asokwa Divisional Police Command by the mob.
Policemen on duty said the suspect has been sent there once for a similar offence.
