The project deadline to the construction of a three-tier interchange at Kwame Nkrumah Circle has been extended from the original date of June, 2016 to September, 2016.

This is due to activities of pedestrians and traders, according to engineers.

Though 80 per cent of work has been done on the project, Chief Resident Engineer Kweku Attakow Diafo told TV3 on Thursday, April 14 that the impasse between traders – whose property were to be demolished – and the project engineers had a toll on progress of work.

“The footprints of some of the roads go through that section and if I have a programme to work in that zone to clear that work and you don’t allow me, it means that all my workers will have to be assigned somewhere,” Mr Diafo said on News 360.

Traders took legal action against the Brazilian contractors Quieroz Galvao and after two years of tussle, an Accra court ruled that property of the traders be demolished at a compensation to make way for the project.

Mr Diafo assured that the extension of the deadline will not add any extra cost to the project.

Phase 1 of the project was inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama in August, 2015, opening a section of the flyover to vehicular traffic.
