Civil Servants still covered under basic national pension scheme.

Servants' Association of Ghana said today that government's statement that all workers should be covered under a basic national pension scheme like the Social Security and National Insurance Trust Pension does not mean the abrogation of the rights of workers under the Pensions' Ordinance Cap 30. This is contained in a statement signed in Accra by Mr Smart Chigabatia, Executive Secretary of the Association. The statement said government has exonerated all Public Officers by amending the provisions of the Pension and Social Security (Amendment) Decree 1975 (SMCD 8) which made pensionable officers automatic members of the Social Security Pension on account of either failing to exercise an option for pension or social security pension scheme or ignorantly opting for the social security pension." The statement said the present position is that "any pensionable public officer who was in the service before the 1st of January 1972 is eligible for pension under Cap 30 regardless of the failure to exercise an option or otherwise." The association repeated its objection to government's policy of running a non-contributory pension under Cap 30 for some public servants while maintaining other workers on a contributory Cap 30.
