Sunyani, July 8, GNA - Civil servants on Tuesday staged a peaceful demonstration through the streets of Sunyani to register their protest over the delay in the payment of a 17 per cent increase in salaries. The demonstrators, numbering more than 100, were accompanied by about 20 policemen.
They wore red arm bands and carried placards some of which read, "Review job evaluation and placements", "President, please see to the welfare of your sons and daughters", "Smith-Graham is not fit for the job", "CLOGSAG members deserve a good and fair deal", "Smith-Graham why are you treating us this way".
Other inscriptions were "Don't bring your Cuban law here", "Graham we are in Ghana", "Fair wages commission has not been fair to CLOGSAG" and "Fair wages stop being anti-CLOGSAG".
The demonstrators paraded through the principal streets of Sunyani from the main Sunyani Post Office through VRA offices, Electoral Commission offices the roundabout and converged at the premises of the Regional Co-ordinating Council.
Addressing them Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, advised the workers to exercise restraint whilst the Coordinating Council worked to ensure that their grievances were addressed. He assured them of government's commitment to fulfilling their campaign promises as well as improving the conditions of service of workers. One of the demonstrators who later spoke to the GNA on conditions of anonymity said: "We will advise ourselves if the government fails to address our problems".
