Civilians warned against wearing military uniforms

Accra, July 22, GNA - The Armed Forces High Command on Friday warned the public to stop wearing or using military uniforms and other accoutrements since their use by unauthorised people was illegal. A statement signed by Colonel E W K Nibo, Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces said the Restriction on the Use of Military Uniforms and Equipment Decree of 1967 was still operative. It said, "no person shall wear or use military uniforms, equipment or accoutrements unless he is a member of the Ghana Armed Forces." The decree further says; "no person shall sell or buy any military uniform, equipment, accoutrements or other materials unless he is authorized by the government to do so."

It further states that no license shall be issued under the Importers Act of 1963 for the importation of any military uniform, equipment or accoutrement.

The statement said the Armed Forces have been receiving reports in recent times on the wearing or use of military uniforms, equipment and other materials by unauthorized persons, especially armed robbers. The statement thus reminded the public that the decree was still in force and any person who contravened its provision committed an offence and was liable to prosecution when arrested.

The anti-robbery patrols have been authorized to check misuse of military uniforms, equipment or accoutrements to ensure compliance with the provisions of the decree.
