'Clean conscience guides my work' - Dr Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said maintaining a clean conscience and protecting Ghana’s interests are the key principles guiding his work in government.

According to him, his approach to public office is rooted in honesty, transparency and responsible management of the public funds entrusted to him.

“What guides me most is a clean conscience. When I go to sleep, I know I haven’t done anything wrong,” Dr Ato Forson said.

The Finance Minister said he had not taken public money and remained committed to being accountable for the resources placed under his responsibility.

“I have not taken any money, and with the money Ghanaians have entrusted to me, I have been honest and transparent,” he said.

Dr Ato Forson also explained that his decisions in office are not influenced by personal relationships or pressure from individuals seeking favours.

He said his inability to grant a request should not necessarily be interpreted as a personal rejection, explaining that some requests may not be in the best interest of the country.

“If you ask something of me and I’m unable to grant your request, it doesn’t mean I don’t like you. It simply means that what you are asking for is something I cannot give you, or what you are asking for may simply not be in Ghana’s best interest,” he stated.

He said putting the national interest ahead of personal considerations is the principle that keeps him focused on his responsibilities as Finance Minister.

“That principle keeps me awake,” Dr Ato Forson added.

His comments come as the Finance Ministry continues to oversee key decisions on taxation, public spending, borrowing and the management of Ghana’s finances.

Dr Ato Forson has repeatedly emphasised fiscal discipline and responsible management of public resources as important to Ghana’s economic recovery.
