Climathon is a global initiative launched by Climate KIC, which is currently operating in over 110 cities globally.

Climathon is a challenge initiated by regions that are engaged in climate action. Studies have found that about 70% of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change are generated in cities.

This is a threat to the world so far as climate change and its crisis remain a major global issue. The 2015 Paris agreement marked one of the enviable achievements in global awareness and publicity on climate change; however, climate change and its crisis have grown beyond action at governmental level and call for collective action.

There is an urgent need for efforts to be made at the local level.

Climathon is organized for this purpose and aims at challenging collective thinking on environmental issues and further promoting the emergence of innovations designed to address the specific climate challenges faced by communities.

This initiative hopes to improve the lives of people and promote more efficient and effective urban policies. Each participant city is encouraged to define a specific issue according to its local challenges. The actors in this campaign include: Experts, entrepreneurs, elected officials and citizens who work together on climatic issues to jointly unearth new climate change adaptation strategies.

In view of this, the Global Youth Empowerment Centre (GYEC) in collaboration with Pentecost University College (Ghana), Climathon (Netherlands), Paradise Pac mineral water and other partners is set to launch Climathon Ghana at the mega Global Climate Forum 2020 (GCF2020) in Accra.

There will be rigorous deliberations on issues on global climate change to come out with practical solutions to check climate crisis in Ghana and the world as a whole. This is a three day Model United Nations (MUN) simulation starting from 5th to 7th of March 2020.

This aims at addressing and increasing the awareness on climate change emergence and to suggest practical ways to fighting climate change. The program is well packed, comprising an intensive panel discussions, climate change advocacy nomination, dialogue on various solutions to environmental hazards, disasters and climate change, clean up exercise among other activities.

This forum is considered the first ever largest global youth gathering in Ghana owing to the calibre of delegates and policy makers from different countries that are coming to participate in this important forum.

In attendance will include: government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corp, International Agency Representatives, NGO’s, the Media, Youth and Student based organizations.

This forum hopes to mark the realization and implementation of policies to mitigate the increasing climatic changes in Africa and the world at large.
