Clinton Leaves Accra For Abuja

The former US President, Bill Clinton left Accra on Tuesday evening for Abuja, Nigeria after a two-day official visit to Ghana.

He was seen off by Mr Alphonse Arthur, Director of State Protocol and officials of the US Embassy in Accra at the Kotoka International Airport. While in the country, President Clinton held a meeting with President John Agyekum Kufuor and some Ministers of State behind closed doors, at the Castle, Osu. He was also the Guest of Honour during the launching of the Foundation for Building the Capital of the Poor (FBCP), on Monday in Accra by President Kufuor.

The Foundation is a programme initiated by the government and devised to assist in mobilising the assets held by the poor to facilitate their economic development. It is a non-profit making company, which was developed jointly through the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD) based in Peru and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Mr. Clinton was the first sitting President of the US to visit Ghana in 1998.

Mr Clinton also called on former President Jerry John Rawlings. Mr. Clinton is a Patron of the Foundation, which would also establish a regional training institute in Accra for the benefit of other African countries interested in property reform programmes.
