Cocoa-Cola Africa Foundation builds primary school for community

Tamale, July 20, GNA - Coca-Cola Africa Foundation has constructed a block of six classrooms, an office, kitchen, dining hall and a water reservoir for the Guunyili Primary School in the Tamale Metropolis.

The cost of the facility, which is GHc 100,884, is the initiative of the Princess Umul Hatiyya Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to providing access to quality education in deprived communities in West Africa.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at Guunayili on Tuesday Mr Philippe Ayivor, Public Affairs and Communications Director of Coca-Cola Equatorial Africa, said the project was in line with the Foundation’s social responsibility.

This is aimed at improving the lives of deprived people in the communities through the provision of quality education, health and entrepreneurship programmes as well as the provision of water and sanitation facilities.

He said it was in line with this vision that the Foundation last year adopted a “build a school” programme to build or renovate at least one school a year.

Mrs Elizabeth De-Souza, the Regional Director of Education, expressed concern about the attitude of teachers especially lateness or absence from school and said this was one of the major setbacks hindering the provision of quality education in the Northern Region.

She said while the Regional Directorate of Education was doing all within its power to take punitive measures against such teachers it was also important for all stakeholders, especially the PTAs, the communities and the chiefs to report such teachers to the appropriate authorities.

Alhaji Haruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive commended Coca-Cola Foundation for its numerous interventions in education, health and other areas and assured them that the assembly would ensure that the facilities were maintained.
