Coke saga: Owusu Bempah to petition UK High C’ssion over BNI attack

The Communication Director of the National Democratic Party, Ernest Owusu Bempah has said he will petition the British High Commission in Ghana over attempts by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to arrest him on Monday evening.

Officials of the BNI were on Monday evening reportedly prevented from picking up the controversial aide of former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, for implicating the President of Ghana in the 12.5-kg cocaine bust involving a Ghanaian lady at Heathrow Airport.

Owusu Bempah who was speaking on a current affairs programme called The Platform on Accra-based radio station, Peace FM said the President lied to Ghanaians through his government communicators when they said the accused Nayele Ametefeh had no connections to him.

Owusu Bempah, who told STARR NEWS he resisted the arrest based on his knowledge of fundamental Human Rights and liberties, said it was time to involve other interest groups.

“Certain people think it is all about Ghana, but I know there are certain interest groups that are also keenly interested in this matter,” he said.

“I am going to petition the British high commission for the way and manner in which the BNI and the security operatives besieged Peace FM and molested me. I am going to make sure that I sue the BNI’s conduct, which borders on my fundamental human rights,” he said.

Owusu Bempah said it was important people stand by their convictions and not allow themselves to be intimidated by security officers.

“Nobody can use the security apparatus to intimidate anybody in this country. We are living in a sovereign nation, and I believe the president knows that.”
