Thursday heavy downpour has killed a 60-year-old woman, injured her daughter and grandson in Kanshegu, a farming community in the Savelugu Municipality of the Northern Region.
The deceased, Sanatu Mohammed 60 died when a building she and her daughter and grandson were occupying collapsed on them killing her instantly while her daughter and grandson who sustained various degrees of injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Savelugu hospital.
The 60-year-old woman was buried 10 am this morning.
The heavy downpour which started around 7pm yesterday destroyed several homes in the area rendering many homeless.
Narrating the incident to savannanews24.com, a resident of the area Abdulai Amadu said, their homes were submerged by the rains; adding that “We could not sleep the whole night because our rooms were flooded”.
The Assemblyman of the Area, Hon. Mahama Adam said the flood was a result of the choked gutters in the area.
He disclosing that the gutters which were constructed in 1992 need dredging and expansion to allow water to flow through freely.
"The gutters are all choked, the reason the whole area is flooded, I'm here to access the situation and report back to the Assembly for the necessary actions to be taken to avert future calamities". He said
The Thursday heavy downpour also affected some parts in the Northern Region including Sagnarigu, Tamale Metropolis, Tolon, Kunbungu, and Nantong.
Information reaching the savannanews24.com indicates that the Nabogu River in the Savelugu Municipality also overflowed its banks, causing destruction to many farms and homes in the area.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Savelugu is yet to respond to the havoc cause by the Thursdays’ rains.
