College of Education students learning with torchlights

Students of the SDA college of Education in the Eastern region have been compelled to learn with torchlights in the evenings as electricity supply to the school has been cut off for several weeks now.

Authorities of the school have reportedly refused to buy credit on their meters since the students have been billed with the charges, upon the instruction of government.

Students now contribute to buy credit themselves but it does not last.

It is feared academic performance of students will be greatly affected as a result of the situation.

The students are threatening to embark on a demonstration if government does not come to their aid.

A member of the Students Representative Council of the school who spoke to Starr News on condition of anonymity said they are being unfairly treated.

“For two weeks now, we have been in darkness. But we have paid our monies. Now we don’t know if it’s the government which is not meeting its responsibilities or it’s the school that is not buying the credits.

“For now, it’s only the students with torchlights who are able to go to the classrooms to learn, those of us without it can’t learn and it’s very unfortunate. The situation is really affecting our academic performance,” he lamented.
