Godfred Yeboah Dame, Counsel for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sent a reconciliatory message to their suspended National Chairman, Paul Awentime Afoko, inviting him to join the campaign team as they seek to win the December 7 general elections.
Dame who was the lead Counsel for the elephant family in the Afoko vs NPP case, said the suspended National Chairman of the party cannot be left to his own fate, hence, the need for the Dankwa-Busia-Dombo tradition to extend an olive branch to him.
“As a party we should all unite now in one accord together with Mr. Afoko. He should come onboard and contribute to the campaign and make sure the NPP decisively defeats the NDC in the December 2016 general elections”, he said.
The NPP lawyer made this observation in an interaction with Accra-based Okay FM Tuesday. He was reacting to the ruling of the High Court that dismissed the case brought against the elephant family by their suspended National Chairman, Paul Afoko.
The Human Rights Court, on Monday, dismissed the case in which suspended Chairman of the NPP Paul Afoko was challenging the party’s decision.
Mr Afoko went to court to overturn a party decision that suspended him as the National Chairman of the Dankwa-Busia-Dombo tradition.
The lawsuit which started in December 2015 contended the constitutionality of the party’s Disciplinary Committee that recommended his suspension.
Mr Afoko was accused by his party of working behind the scenes to block the party’s chances of winning the December 7 elections.
The NPP lawyer commenting further said the decision of the court vindicates the position of the party that it did no wrong in suspending Mr. Afoko.
When asked whether the court’s ruling was a victory to the party, Mr. Dame said “I only see one victor in the larger entity called the New Patriotic Party and I say so because as indicated our main opponents have been ridiculing us – they just raise their fingers and point to the NPP that look at them on Paul Afoko’s case. So our party Chairman was providing ammunition to our main political opponent which was not fair. So as I said the victor is NPP and there is no vanquished”.
Going forward, he said it would be better for Afoko to abandon any plans of appealing the court ruling, stressing that the litigation will not augur well for the party three months going into the elections.
“Our ultimate goal is to capture political power and I don’t think it is necessary with all due respect to Mr. Afoko to continue with the court litigation. Appeal is his right, but we will have no option than to defend ourselves. We believe in the merits of the matter but we think that is not necessary. What is necessary is the victory we are craving for”.
