Accra (Greater Accra), 22 Jan. '99 -

The Ghana Commercial Bank today presented a cheque for 36 million cedis to three institutions in the health and education sectors as part of its social development programme.

The beneficiaries are the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital which received 10 million cedis, and the University of Ghana, four million cedis for the celebration of their 75th and 50th anniversaries respectively. The Ghana Heart Foundation received 22 million cedis.

Mr Kwesi Afriyie Ansah, the Acting Managing Director, said the bank will focus on the health and educational sectors this year because of public concern and the need to improve conditions there.

He said the bank has opened its services to Ghanaians to raise money for the Heart Foundation, adding that the bank has already donated 20 million cedis to the Foundation.

Dr Albert G.B. Amoah, Secretary to the Heart Foundation, who received the cheque on behalf of the Foundation, assured Ghanaians that monies being donated are not being misused.

"We are properly investing the money to yield more in order to benefit the many heart patients on the waiting list at the Cardiothoracic Centre'' .

He noted that presentations to needy institutions such as the universities would help in improving such establishments and check serious issues such as the brain-drain in both the educational and health sectors.
