Commercial driver fined for careless driving

Sekondi Feb.21,- GNA - A Sekondi District Magistrate's Court on Monday imposed a three million cedis fine on Ibrahim Adam, a commercial driver, for careless driving and negligently causing harm.

The accused who pleaded guilty to both charges would go to jail for 18 months in hard labour in default of the fine.

The court ordered that two million cedis of the fine should be given to the relatives of Joseph Assabil, who died four months after sustaining multiple injuries when a Benz Bus the accused was driving knocked him down.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joe Hedidor, said on August 1 last year, the accused drove the Benz bus with passengers on board from Takoradi to Inchaban.

He said on reaching the Sekondi School for Deaf near Inchaban at about 0705 hrs,. an Ivorian bus also full of passengers approached on the other lane of the road.

Chief Inspector Hedidor said the Ivorian bus suddenly drove into his lane and Adama blew his horn and put on his car lights to alert the Ivorian driver.

He said the accused quickly drove into the other lane and in the process knocked down Joseph Assabil on the pavement of the road. Chief Inspector Hedidor said Assabil sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

He said four months later Assabil died and after careful investigations, the accused was charged with the offences.
