Commercial drivers advised to be cautious this yuletide

Accra, Dec. 12, GNA - Mr Emmanuel Armstrong Mensah, General Secretary of the General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers' Union (GTPCWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has expressed concern about the spate of accidents on the roads and appealed to drivers to be cautious especially as Christmas approaches. Again he said, they should aim at observing road traffic regulations during and after the Christmas and New Year festivities in order to improve on road safety and most importantly lost of human lives.

In a fraternal Christmas message to their social partners and members, Mr Mensah said, it was important also to highlight some of the unwanted behaviours that causes these happenings, such as over-speeding, unnecessary overtaking, drunk-driving and refusal to observe mandatory rest property.

He said such carnage on our roads continue to affect the nation's human, financial and material resources of operators in the transport industry that were being paid by insurance companies to victims due to indiscipline behaviours by drivers.

Mr Mensah commended the National Road Safety Commission, the police and other road transport regulatory agencies for their good work in trying to deepen the sensitisation effort. He expressed the hope that through collaborative effort by all social partners, members and stakeholders, the carnage would minimize as the nation needed all her citizenry alive to continue to play their various roles towards the realization of the national objectives. Mr Mensah advised commercial drivers to avoid the use of over-used vehicle tyres, which he said was also a contributory factor to fatal accidents on the roads. He wished all commercial drivers a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance.
