Committee suggests 4-year secondary education

The Education Reforms review Committee has recommended that Senior Secondary course should be four years instead of three. The first two years should help the SSS student to lay a good foundation. Consequently, the students will have to concentrate only on the proposed core subjects.

However, the committee said students who are academically good could b enter the second year of the four -year course thus completing in three years.

Students will choose their elective subjects at the end of the second years.

Furthermore core subjects should be run for the four-year period whilst elective subjects are taken during the last two years. It is the view of the committee that the first year of the three - year SSS student should be a consolidated year.

It explained that students will study only the core subjects during the first year after which the elective subjects will be selected. It noted that it will be necessary for some students to spend four years on the SSS programme.

It was the concern of the committee that majority of the majority of primary JSS work and so are JSS graduates ill- prepared for SSS education to derive the full benefit. It attributed the cause to lack of enough trained and qualified teacher for some subjects such as science, mathematics, technical and vocational subjects.
