Committee to investigate Ghanasco student's riot

Tamale, June 3, GNA - An eight-Member Committee has been inaugurated in Tamale to investigate the causes of student's unrest at Ghana Senior High (Ghanasco) which led to the closure of the school on Monday. The committee chaired by Mr Charles Nyabu, an educationist would establish the extent of damage caused to life and property.

Other members are Alhassan Mumuni Abukari; Secretary, Superintendent of Police Peter Baba, Chief Mr Nantogma Amidu Dramani, Mr Osman Halidu Macarious, Mr Sylvester Adongo and Mr Joseph Kudjo Kwah. The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Northern Regional Minister Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba and has two weeks to conclude its work. It would be recalled that students of Ghanasco rioted on Sunday evening, May 30 against the ban of the use of mobile phones on campus by the school authorities.

In the process, about three teacher's bungalows were vandalised while a motor bike belonging to one of the tutors was burnt. The police who went there to restore order in the school had their armour vehicles windscreen crash while 16 students who were arrested have since been given bail.

The Minister urged the committee to come out with truthful and impartial findings that could be used to solve other related issues which might arise from other schools.

He charged the committee to identify the perpetrators as well as the victims of the disturbances and make appropriate recommendations to forestall future occurrence. Mr Nyabu, on behalf of his colleagues promised to be diligent and impartial in their work and to produce a report that would address all the problems identified to enhance the image of the school and improve academic work.

He observed that mobile phones has of recent times been a major cause of agitation by students across the country, adding that the issue should be tackled holistically to prevent its negative effect on education. 3 June 10
