Communities asked to initiate self-help projects

Mr. Augustine Appiah, District Chief Executive of Krachi Nchumuru has challenged communities in the District to initiate self-help projects to support government’s developmental efforts.

He said it would be easier for government to meet the needs of the people, when communities identified and executed self- help projects through communal efforts.

Mr. Appiah was speaking at a social auditing engagement workshop organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at Gyato Chayo in the Nchumuru District of the Oti Region, under the theme “Citizens for Transparency and Accountability.”

He said his office was ready to support communities with sustainable development plans to open up the area for rapid growth.

Mr Appiah applauded the NCCE for the engagement and said it would help the people develop interest in local governance.

Mr Abass Yussif, Acting Director of NCCE in the District urged the people to monitor and own development projects in their communities to avoid shoddy works.

He said their commitment to monitoring community development projects would promote transparency and advance fight against corruption.

Mr. Frempong Gyan Mante, Krachi Nchumuru District Police Commander, urged citizens to report cases of corruption to law enforcement agencies and assured the people of police protection.

The programme, which was funded by the European Union formed part of the second phase of the Accountability, Rule of law and Anti-Corruption Programme of the NCCE.

The community identified electricity, water and lack of teachers as major challenges.

A five-member committee led by Mr. Nandi Napo, the Assembly-member of the area was set up to ensure the challenges were addressed.
