Ho, July 24, GNA – The US Group of Companies, a limited liability entity in Ghana, is to introduce a “floating hospital” on the Volta Lake.
The facility would provide health education and treatment to people along the river bank.
US is the Group’s name and has nothing to do with the United States of America.
Chief Godfred Medicine, Chairman of the Group, who told the GNA at the weekend in Ho, said the “floating hospital” would have theatres and well qualified medical professionals to offer “first class” healthcare from one end of the river bank to the other.
He said the initiative was to help the country achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on health.
“We’ve been hearing stories of women dying while trying to give birth and children dying of preventable diseases, so we have decided to bring healthcare to their doorsteps and create possibilities of good health for them,” he said.
Chief Medicine said the Group was also building 10 big boats which could take between 50 and 75 persons each to make transportation easier and comfortable on the Lake.
He said all the boats would be insured and life jackets provided for every passenger.
Chief Medicine said all passengers would have their loads carried in separate boats with other emergency boats travelling alongside.
He said there would be a monitoring device to track all boats to ensure safety.
Chief Medicine said the Group had six branches in the country with Ho being the latest.
He said the Group, established three years ago, has 28 business lines including US Microfinance, US Merchandise, US Farms, US Real Estates and US Communications.
