Compensation for victims of military mayhem

The government is to pay a total of ?100 million in compensation to victims of the April 26, military mayhem at North Suntreso in Kumasi.

The Regional Co-coordinating council, which initiated a probe into the incident, is expected to prepare a white paper in support of the recommendations of Justice Abrahams? Committee for the approval and subsequent payment of compensation to the victims.

The six-man Committee of Enquiry recommended that compensation in respect of medical bills and loss of properties be paid to all identified victims of the atrocities.

About 13 victims would make claims of about ?94 million against documental evidence.

Properties damaged during the brutalities include Nissan Pick up AS 9210 Q, Toyota Corolla Taxi cab AS 74 D, Dahaitu GR 9698 G, Suzuki GR 1013 H, Fiat Tempera AS 6499 P, Leyland articulated truck AS 5622 N, Madza 322 AS 1224 F.

Others include Saturn Sports Car AS 4796 S, Benz Ezzo GR 3541 K, Nissan Urvan GR 2871 S, Toyota Pick up GR 5731 M, Opel Astra Taxicab AS 3857 U and Opel Astra taxicab AS 5297 T.

Most of the aforementioned vehicles had their windscreens and doors damaged.

According to the 83-page report, Akwasi Senyah would claim ?9 million while Yaw Gyamfi is to claim ?12.6 million with Daniel Boakye Agyemang and Kwadwo Gyamfi also claiming ?9.1 million and ?10.7 million respectively.

About ?5.8 million in respect of destroyed items at the Serwaa B. Bonsu Licensed Chemical Store has also been listed for payment.

It will be recalled that some residents of North Suntreso, a suburb in Kumasi on April 27, 2005 after 24-year old soldier, Private Emmanuel Quansah (No. 194685) of the 5th Battalion of Infantry at Tamale was lynched by unidentified people.
