Comptroller-General seeks advice from past, present GIS heads

Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Kwame Asuah Takyi has acknowledged the need for the present heads of the service to learn from the past directors of the service.

According to him, one of the effective ways the GIS can move ahead and achieve its goals was to tap into the expertise of the former heads.

Commending the past directors of the service he said, “I must indicate that one of the greatest assets of our institution is the institutional memory which you present and is critical to the positive transformation of this services. Your views on the way forward for our humble institution will be very much welcome.”

The Comptroller-General made these comments at the first meeting between past and present heads of the Immigration Service which took place at the GIS headquarters in Accra.

As part of the GIS’ operational activities in expansion of the service, units like the Immigration Professional Standards and Ethics Unit (IPSEU), the International Relations Unit, the Chaplaincy and the Protocol and events Management Unit have been created.

In addition to the expansion activities in relation to migration, Ghana has passed the immigration Service Act (908) in 2016 and Legislative Instrument (LI) 2245. This has entrusted into the GIS the responsibility of “patrolling the country’s borders, empowering the personnel of the Service with the legal mandate to bear arms and also to issue entry visas abroad.”

Clinic Establishment

Kwame Asuah Takyi revealed further that, a clinic had been established on the premises GIS HQ to cater for the needs of the serving and retired officers.



“As some of you are aware, we also have established a clinic, which is located at the ground floor of Block B at the Headquarters. This is expected to cater for the needs of serving and retired officers. The facility is also open to our clients for medical examination.”
