Computer recycling centre to be created to manage computer waste

Accra, April 6 GNA - A computer-recycling centre for the Ministry of Education and Sports would soon be created at the Afienya Youth Leadership Training Institute to help to recover the value of over-aged computers.

This would help manage the computer waste and to prevent the creation of garbage from over-used computers, Mr Kjell Rye Ron, Director of the Global Technology Academy (GTA) in the United States, told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday.

Mr Rye is leading a 12-member team of American computer experts, who are currently in the country for a two-week workshop to train some selected teachers and students in the Central Region on computer installation, refurbishment and networking.

Mr Rye said this was the team's fourth workshop to be organised for students and teachers in the country, adding; "this is in line with the Government's commitment to pursuing an Information Communication and Technology (ICT) policy aimed at accelerating national development. He said the project was also aimed at transforming Ghana's educational system using ICT to improve and expand access, training and research resources and facilities as well as to improve the quality of education, teaching and learning.

Mr Rye said the project targeted the schools because the students were the future leaders and needed to be technically sound and strong enough to facilitate Ghana's e-schools initiative. He said 500 computers had so far been donated during the team's previous visits including 45 pieces to be donated to the Cape Coast Technical Institute, Takoradi Technical Institute and Sekondi Technical College.

He said an additional 1,000 computers would be donated during the summer programme for Northern sector schools in October this year.
