Agona Nyankrom (C/R), April 27, GNA - A visit to nine police cells in the Agona and Awutu-Effutu-Senya districts by officials of the Commission on Human Rights And Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has revealed that people placed in custody in police cells ease and urinate in buckets in the cells.
The situation had created very bad odour and made the place very unpleasant and health hazard to those in custody. The cells are at Agona Swedru, Agona Nyankrom, Agona Nsaba, and Agona Duakwa all in the Agona district.
The rest are at Winneba, Senya Beraku, Awutu Beraku, Kasoa and Bawjiase in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya district.
Mr Richmond Mensah, Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Director of CHRAJ, said this in an interview with the GNA on Tuesday.
Mr Mensah, who was on two weeks' visit to police cells and prisons in the two districts, said the situation where people in cells used the single room as their dinning place, place of convenience and also a place of sleeping could create health problem for them.
He said all the police stations he visited, the police operate in rented houses where no toilet and urinal facilities were provided for people placed in police custody.
Mr Mensah appealed to NGOs to assist the government to improve conditions at the cells.
