The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Abgodza has acknowledged the deplorable state of roads across the country.

According to him, the current condition of the road network is not something the country can be proud of.

“The fact is that if we had significant improvement of roads around the country, we wouldn't be hearing the kind of agitation we are having across the country. The fact is that the road condition across the country is nothing any of us should be proud of,” the minister said this on Citi FM on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Agbodza stated that despite the consistent efforts by the previous government through its road initiatives to address the issue, the results fell short of expectations.

He noted that many road projects awarded to contractors were either abandoned or never commenced at all; a situation he attributed to the non-payment of funds.

“I agree that the previous government attempted on many occasions to improve roads in the country. They had different programs, year of roads one, year of road two and others, but the bottom line is that many of those projects, as of the time I went around, the contractors were basically not even on site,” he stated.

“They awarded projects in 2020, that contractor never even stepped foot on site. They awarded projects in 2020, 2021, and 2022, but after about 15% of the work was done and the contractors left site. Why? Because they recertificate and we are unable to pay them so they packed up and left. Road is hugely capital intensive,” the minister added.

He assured of the government’s commitment to resolving the matter to improve the general road network situation in the country.
