Confusion broke out in Atiwa West after the District Chief Executive (DCE) allegedly prevented the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Lawyer Laurette Korkor Asante, from commissioning an Astroturf project she claimed to have lobbied for.

In a video shared on social media by Wontumi Communications, the MP was seen at the site to commission the facility when tensions arose.

Before the programme could begin, a confrontation occurred.

While the MP was addressing the gathering, a man stepped forward, warning her that he had already communicated his decision to her and insisting that she could not proceed with the event.

According to the MP, alleged thugs described by her as “national security operatives” began disrupting the scene, overturning tables and creating chaos.

“It is because of you that in 2022 I lobbied GNPC to build the Astroturf for you people. But the DCE said he won’t allow me to commission the facility, so he has brought national security to beat us here. Before I became MP, I lobbied to get this project done,” Korkor Asante told the crowd.

Police officers, believed to be the MP’s security detail, later intervened and whisked her away from the scene for her safety.

Meanwhile, Wontumi Communications, in a post accompanying the video, claimed, “Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Korkor Asante, was attacked by NDC thugs who were deployed by the DCE at Kwabeng during the commissioning of an Astroturf.”
