Confusion at Ghana Re-Insurance

...WORKERS SMELL RAT, AS HUNDREDS WOULD BE LAID OFF

The nation’s re-insurance company is currently in a flood of confusion as the board of directors in agreement with management is about to embark on a major restructuring.

About half the current staff population of the company are expected to be sacked as a result of the re-structuring, the first in its history. Those likely to be affected are staff working with lower qualifications, like Middle School Leaving Certificate, the Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates and the RSA holders.

Sources at the Ghana Re-Insurance Company have hinted that the restructuring is aimed at redeploying a chunk of the staff with lower qualifications and make way for the numerous unemployed graduates and scholars who have the requisite skills needed to move the company forward.

There is growing confusion at the company as some staff fear being victimised with the intended restructuring. Chronicle investigations established that those critical of the restructuring oppose it because of fears that it is intended to lay off political opponents of the system and that the Managing Director, Nuamah, might use is as an opportunity to settle personal scores.

Nuamah declined commenting on the issue when contacted. According to him, he is not the right person to comment on the restructuring exercise, adding that, management would issue a statement to that effect in due course.

A management personnel who pleaded anonymity however told the paper in a recent interview that reports and media propaganda to the effect that Nuamah intends to lay off his perceived enemies in the company are false. According to him, it is impossible for the Managing Director to decide on who to go home, since there would be a clear cut procedure for such a process and the M.D. in his capacity would have little role to play in that respect.

Continuing, he explained that the target of this restructuring are those considered as liability on the company, saying most of the staff is indeed a liability. “My brother, could you believe people are working at Ghana-Re with middle school leaving certificates, and O Level’s while graduates and learned people have no work to do. And when management decides to lay them off, they say someone hates them,” the management personnel stressed.

Independent investigations established that the proposed restructuring is the brainchild of the new Board aimed at bringing on board fresh limbs and not an individual decision of Nuamah.

According to him, those who fear being victimised are hunted by their own deeds as there has been evidence that some unscrupulous staff peddle lies to the media about management.
