Accra, March 2, GNA - Parliament on Monday announced that the 80.35 million dollars loan from the African Development Fund to Ghana would be used to finance the construction of Awoshie-Pokuase road. The loan would be paid within a period of 30 years.
Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, said the project, which was the first of its kind to be executed in Ghana, would provide educational, water and sanitation facilities for communities along the road, particularly Awoshie and Pokuase. He said the financing of these facilities would necessitate a supplementary loan. Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija, said that in constructing the Awoshie-Pokuase road, efforts must be made to avoid accidents
He cited that some settlements were to close to the Kasoa-Accra road resulting in accidents.
Ms. Botchway said that children were the most vulnerable as some who attempted to cross the road were knocked down by vehicles. She recalled that last year, about 447 accidents were recorded on the Kasoa-Accra road out of which 26 deaths occurred.
Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, MP for Asawase, asked contractors who would be working on the Awoshie-Pokuase road to complete work as scheduled to avoid the country from incurring more cost. He asked the Ministry of Roads and Highways to expedite action on documentation in respect with the project to prevent delays in its execution.
