Workers of Volta Star Textiles Limited are demonstrating this morning (Monday January 11) at Juapong, Volta Region, over their unpaid salary arrears. The angry workers say they have not been paid for a year now.

One of the workers, Broni Lordwin Selorm, told Class News’ regional correspondent Emmanuel Atukpa in an interview that: “We have worked in a government company for one good year without salary. Some of our colleagues have died through hunger. We can’t afford our rent. Our children have dropped out of school. We want the government to come and tell us that the company is in its hands and he’ll be able to come and pay our outstanding debt.”

This is not the first time the workers have taken to the streets to demand payment of salary arrears.

In November last year, the frustrated workers pitched camp at the entrance of the company to demand payment of their 10 months’ salary arrears and some allowances they claim management had failed to honour.

Emmanuel Atukpa reported at the time that about 70 angry workers prevented the company’s management from entering the premises.

According to him, chiefs of the area pleaded with the employees to take a month’s salary and resume work while management pays the balance, but the workers kicked against the arrangement.

Some workers who had agreed to take a month’s salary and resume work at the time were labelled saboteurs and were also prevented from entering the premises.
