Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and Minister of Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has advised contractors to unite their front so they could win more contracts from government.
She wants the contractors to assist government to improve on infrastructure deficit in the country including housing.
The minister said, the housing deficit in the country currently stands at 1.7 million and it has been projected to reach 1.9 million by 2020.
Without the assistance from contractors, housing Ghanaians would be extremely difficult hence the need for them to come together and help the government towards this aim.
“Contractors are responsible for building houses, constructing roads among others. Whatever we do in this country, we require the services of these contractors and so if they are not united, we will not have quality service delivered. They should have a united voice and help us.”
The president, she added, is willing and ready to assist and collaborate with Ghanaian contractors to ensure the infrastructure gap is closed. She was speaking at an event organised by the Association of Contractors today [Monday].
On his part, the newly elected President for the association, Mr Yaw Prosper, underscored the need for government to have confidence in Ghanaian contractors and stop awarding all major contracts to foreigners.
He said, “we have skilled and qualified contractors in Ghana. We equally have qualified and skilled engineers in this country who can work effectively for the country”.
He also appealed to government to pay contractors on time to enable them work efficiently.
