Coronavirus: ‘Decongest’ market places to stop spread – GMA demands

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has charged local government authorities to institute the ‘social distance’ control measure in market places in the direction of preventing the spread of coronavirus.

“You already know the capacity of our markets. Reduce the numbers of persons in the market to stop overcrowding”. President of the Ghana Medical Association Dr. Frank Ankobea proposed in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.

The association fears the country may suffer an uncontrollable spread of the virus if markets are not regularized to meet the ‘social distance’ measure President Nana Addo directed in a televised broadcast last Sunday.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi based Pure FM on Thursday, Dr. Frank Ankobea furiously warned that the situation in the market places could fuel the spread and get out of control if measures are not immediately put in place.

“All that is important is the health of Ghanaians, nothing else. It is indeed difficult to implement social distance in various market places. However, managers of our market will have to make sure they minimize overcrowding, he said, adding that “we have come to a point where we need managers of the markets places to work”.

According to him, since local government authorities know the capacities of the various market in the country, they can easily know how to go about minimizing their population.

“Henceforth, reduce the numbers of persons in the market to stop overcrowding”, he cautioned.

GMS also charged the local government to effectively educate the public on the need to stay away from going to the market places when necessary.

“Let the managers of the market whether the KMA, the Assembly or whatever, put things in place”, the Dr Ankobea noted.
