The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on 8 May 2020, donated food and hygiene packages to 100 households in Nima, in the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly.
The team from GIZ Ghana, led by Country Director Regina Bauerochse Barbosa, presented the items at the office of the Chief Imam, and was received by the Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, on behalf of the Nima community.
The contributions form part of GIZ’s measures to support communities and partner institutions in their fight against the spread of COVID-19. It is also to help ease the social and economic impact that communities most affected by the virus.
In her remarks, the Country Director, Regina Bauerochse Barbosa, explained that “GIZ Ghana is very committed to safeguard the health, safety, and security of its employees, and we are guided by the GIZ values of protecting human rights and treating our employees and communities, especially those who are vulnerable and less privileged.”
“In times like these when COVID-19 has impacted social and economic aspects of life, we should interpret the social distancing requirement to mean physical distancing, but not to distance ourselves from the concerns and challenges of more vulnerable groups. Therefore, in solidarity with our neighbours in Nima, the management and staff took a collective decision to support the needy within the municipality,” she said.
Ms. Bauerochse Barbosa hoped that the contributions would help ease the burden of residents during this holy month of Ramadan.
The Chief Imam expressed his profound gratitude to GIZ Ghana and asked that Allah continue to bless the company to grow and succeed, as GIZ Ghana had provided for the needy and vulnerable in this holy month of Ramadan.
He added that the relief packages will be extended to needy and put to good use. The Chief Imam concluded by praying, asking Allah to protect the nation, management and staff of GIZ Ghana, and all others from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The relief package consists of 100 bags of rice, 100 bottles of two litres of cooking oil, 25 boxes of mackerel, 21 boxes of tomato paste, 500 pieces carbolic soaps, 7 boxes of bar soap and 100 one litre bottles of hand sanitizers and is intended to reach about 500 persons.
