A pediatric nurse at the Konongo Odumasi Hospital, Efua Sey, has advised parents to avoid masking up their babies because it can be fatal.
Stressing on the need for parents to protect their kids against the deadly Coronavirus pandemic, the astute nurse indicated nose mask can be dangerous on babies since their airways are smaller.
“Parents should never use nose mask for their babies, their airways are smaller than adults and they do not process carbon dioxide like adults do, so breathing behind the mask can be deadly,” Sey told Dailymailgh.com.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US, “cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.”
She added that parents must do well to keep their wards safe as the impact of the dreaded virus on children can be fatal.
“The disease is a global pandemic and kids are not exempted from it. Parents should desist from taking their children, especially toddlers and infants to public places,” Sey said.
“It is advisable for parents to keep their babies in carriers and place a lightweight breathable carrier over them when they are going out,” the nurse advised.
Sey is among the top ranking nurses in the Ashanti Akim Central Municipal Hospital and previously won the nurse of the year award in her area.
