Coronavirus: Lecturer donates to Ankaful Prisons

Dr. Kingsley Preko, a Senior Lecturer of the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Cape Coast has donated some items to the Ankaful prison's annex to assist the government in the fight against COVID-19 in the country.

The items included; 730 pieces of hand sanitizers, 60 packs of nose masks, a carton of liquid soap, 11 cartons of multipurpose soaps, 50 packs of soft drinks and three bags of rice amounting to GHc 7,500.00.

The move was in reaction to calls by some prison officers on donors to assist prisoners to prevent them from contracting the pandemic.

It was also due to the fact that prisons had a number of handicapped and helpless individuals who were unable to provide essentials, but were the most neglected in many communities.

Dr Preko said the donation was made possible by some friends and family who contributed their bits in both kind and cash.

He charged all who were capable, to give back to society in the crucial times saying,"If we take care of ourselves only, we are not doing any good to ourselves because the few who are not protected may put us at risk someday, somehow."

Dr. Preko who is also the Vice President of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) said the GRCS as a humanitarian firm was working tirelessly to complement Government’s efforts in the fight against the pandemic.

Community sensitization activities, education on proper hand washing, the supply of hand sanitizers at cheap costs, the distribution of food in some Regions and a host of others were some support the GRCS was undertaking.

He however urged the Government to include his outfit to help with effective contact tracing and advised the public to fully cooperate with the Government and take all the precautionary measures given by the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Edward Fiifi Acquah who received the items thanked Dr Preko for the gesture and appealed to institutions to provide them with basic drugs and other essentials.
