The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources through its Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) has begun what it describes as an “enhanced” water and sanitation project in bid to promote the need for proper hand washing which remains an essential part of the guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation to prevent a further spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Already the CWSA has commenced the distribution of local hand washing facilities, such as tippy taps, at the household levels. Also, Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds and community clinics have been assisted to construct such facilities and provided soaps and hand sanitisers.

Speaking after the presentation of some hand washing items and protective equipment to the Osu Children’s home in Accra, Minister of Sanitation & Water Resources Cecilia Dapaah told reporters that “Our president has worked so hard that to make sure that at every given moment he is transparent with the country, that he gives out the update. We on our side, we are concerned. We want to make sure that we support.”

As a result, Ms Dapaah said new and intensified plans are being rolled out to ensure that the CWSA distributes more handwashing facilities across the country.

“So it’s part of their regular operations, but now we have intensified this operation to make sure that the president’s directive of making sure we observe the WHOs protocols, all five, but most importantly - hand washing,” the minister added.
