Coronavirus: Proposing salary slash for teachers is insensitive – GNAT tells Prof Addei

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has described as unfortunate, the 50 percent salary cut for teachers suggested by Professor Stephen Adei.

Professor Adei, former rector of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), has over the period raised concerns about the need for teachers to take a paycut for staying home amidst the Coronavirus outbreak.

A statement, signed by GNAT General Secretary, Thomas T Musah and copied to the GhanaWeb, said the former rector has been the tormentor-in-chief of teachers in the country.

“The least the Ghanaian public could expect is the Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT, entering into combat with His Eminence, Professor Stephen Adei, the tormentor-in-chief of teachers in the country.”

“We are doing so against the backdrop of his proposal that teachers be made to forgo 50% of their salaries, for staying home, during this period of anxiety and uncertainty. We wish to stress that this is not the first time Professor Adei has turned his radar on our teachers,” the statement said.

GNAT said its respect for public opinion will not pave the way for offensive expressions on members.

“We wish to state that we won’t accept any repugnant and offensive expressions on our persons or families. We shall continue to accept constructive, and morale-boosting criticisms and not reprehensible, offensive and degrading ones. We therefore condemn in no uncertain terms the utterances of Professor Adei.”
