Residents of Wassa Saaamang in the Wasa Amenfi East district of the Western Region have been left in a state of shock after a thirty-year-old woman’s corpse was exhumed, raped and left at the cemetery on Thursday, February 1, 2018.
The late Maame Adwoa's (who was buried three weeks ago) body was found near her grave with cloth covering her private part removed and exposed, raising suspicion of been raped by the culprit(s).
Recounting the incident to Otec News’ Francis Appiah, an eyewitness said a week after the corpse burial, a lady in search of firewood at Wassa Saamang cemetery, returned to inform the deceased family of the exhumation of the corpse, but the family turned deaf ears to the information.
Narrating the incident, the eyewitness said three weeks after Maadwoa’s burial, youth in the community led by the 'Asafoankye' went to the cemetery to dig a grave for a corpse to be buried, one of them, believed to be Maadwoa’s family member, chanced upon the exhumed corpse and immediately informed the family.
“When the family came to the cemetery, they identified the body as Maadwoa and they all ‘explode’ into uncontrollable tears. They left the corpse and immediately informed the chiefs of the community”, he continued.
A family source indicated that the exhumed corpse has been raped by the unknown assailants because footprints were found around the body and her legs wide opened, suspecting sexual intercourse between the assailants and the dead body.
“When we were burying Maadwoa, we covered all her body except the head, so it’s strange that the cloth covering her private part has been removed and her legs wide opened,” a family member said.
The exhumed body has since been reburied, after the chief of the community performed the necessary rites.
