Corrupt EC commissioners must resign – Edmund Kyei

Edmund Kyei has demanded the immediate resignation of the three senior commissioners at the Electoral Commission (EC) as they engage in a public spat over corruption allegations.

To him, the commissioners’ inability to resolve the current internal wrangling at the state agency is a clear show of their ineptitude in the management of the highly respected office.

The NPP communicator’s assertion comes after some ‘faceless” staff members of the EC presented a strong worded petition to the presidency, accusing the EC boss of massive financial malfeasance and adopting divide and rule tactics to run the electoral body.

The aggrieved workers claimed, among other things, that Mrs Osei’s decision to cancel a contract awarded to Superlock Technologies Limited (STL), a company contracted to supply and manage Biometric Voter Registration machines (BVRs) and the Biometric Voter Devices (BVDs), as well as her directive for the payment of $76,000 to IT firm, Dream Oval, were fraudulent.

These allegations were met with a counter press statement by the EC Chairperson to flatly deny all allegations leveled against her, labeling them as “baseless” and “untrue”.

Charlotte Osei added that her embattled deputy Georgina Opoku Amankwaah could be behind a petition seeking her impeachment.

She alleged that Madam Amankwaah issued clearance for the release of over GHC40 million without prior knowledge and authorization of the Chairperson or the Commission; a move which resulted in her indictment leading to her suspension from official duties at the commission.

Against that backdrop, Edmund Kyei has challenged the commissioners at the Electoral Commission to resign from their post.

“I demand that all commissioners at the EC must resign and let President Akufo-Addo appoint competent people to manage the outfit as they have proven to be incapable of managing their own affairs,” the NPP communicator stressed.

He explained that the turn of events at the EC depicts poor management and sheer inability to handle matters within their jurisdiction; hence the authorities must step aside for the President to appoint capable and credible persons to take over the reins of the office to ensure the sanctity of the Commission.
