A stalwart of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei has downplayed the relevance of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in the fight against corruption in Ghana.

Speaking on Bresosem (a political talk show) on @pure957fm with Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah (Vice Prez. UTAG), the Private Legal Practitioner underscored that, if the Country is committed to fighting corruption, then it must resource the Attorney General’s (AG) office rather than creating a semi-autonomous body which performs the same function as the AG’s office.

“Doc, there are competent men and women in the AG’s office. They can do the work if they are properly resourced. This OSP office is irrelevant and anybody who harbors the dream that Martin Amidu’s office will fight corruption in this country should revise his or her notes because it will forever remain a figment in our imagination.

The solution is to resource the Attorney General’s office and equip them well. If the AG’s office is properly resourced, you will see the results.” He stated.

Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Mafo, earlier lamented about the wanton corruption in Ghana’s public sector and begged Ghanaians to assist in the fight.

The Netherlands’ Ambassador to Ghana, Ron Strikker also has asked the government to pursue a policy of “Ghana beyond corruption” rather than aid, questioning our modules used in addressing the corruption canker.

Two years after the establishment of the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) by an act of the Parliament to help lessen the burden on existing anti-corruption agencies and remove the institutional roadblocks that exist as hindrances to the fight against corruption, with the end result being to make anti-corruption agencies in the country more effective at discharging their duties, it is yet to complete a single prosecution of persons flagged as corrupt.
