The performance of the Akufo-Addo administration has been woefully disappointing as it has failed to restore hope to Ghanaians a year after assumption of office, National Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Murtala Mohammed has said.

In a piece which he scored the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) below average, Murtala noted that nepotism, corruption, mismanagement, and outright incompetence has engulfed the government while stressing that these were “the same mistakes the erstwhile John Mahama administration did to incur the wrath of Ghanaians in the 2016 elections”.

He further accused government of refusing to tackle corruption allegations leveled against some officials, a posture he asserts, goes contrary to an assurance Akufo-Addo gave that his government would protect and manage the public purse to engender the necessary social and economic development.

Murtala has charged government to sit up and bring relief to Ghanaians as expectations have not been met.

Below is his full statement:

BELOW AVERAGE MR. PRESIDENT

The overwhelming goodwill that the New Patriotic Party enjoyed during the last 2016 election has been eroded partly due to cronyism, nepotism, corruption, mismanagement, and outright incompetence in 2017 – the same ills that have characterized successive governments in Ghana since 1993.

We must all know by now that, the NDC and the NPP cannot develop Ghana. Their intention and understanding of governance are to feed themselves and their children – a clear demonstration that they have no clue whatsoever as to how to develop this country.

After barely one year in government, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his NPP government have justified the “DUKA DAYA” cliché labeled against the NPP and the NDC by the people of Ghana over their mismanagement of the Nation’s Resources in this 4th Republic.

The Akufo-Addo government is simply repeating the same mistakes the erstwhile John Mahama administration did to incur the wrath of Ghanaians in the 2016 elections. Promises made to Ghanaians during the 2016 electioneering campaign by the NPP have, upon assumption of office, been postponed, adjusted, and in most cases completely reneged upon. Not a single promise has been honoured in its entirety as at the end of 2017.

The Party has mastered the art of stealing legally from government coffers at the detriment of the poor innocent masses.

Sadly, corruption allegations are swept under the carpet without proper investigations and proper accountability.

Inflation of government contracts are worse off than that of previous regimes. Ethnocentric comments and partisan bigotry are still rife with impunity among public officials. The government has imposed 110 ministers on the Republic, bloating the already over bloated government expenditure and deepening the red-tape in government administration.

Where is the "change" this government promised Ghanaians?

The Akufo-Addo-led NPP Government must as a matter of urgency tackle the liquidity problem in Ghana and make living in Ghana easy for the average Ghanaian as times are harder nowadays. Government must translate the so-called economic gains from our oil discovery into the pockets of poor Ghanaians.

The Progressive People’s Party calls on Ghanaians to be AWAKE, read between the lines and make the right choices going forward. We must always be reminded that we get what we vote for.

We must, in the next election, rise against this concrete “DUKA DAYA” status quo by voting both parties out for new and fresh ideas to save our motherland.

We conclude, with all due respect to Mr. President, that the performance during the year under review has not met the people’s expectation and is considered BELOW AVERAGE!

Murtala Mohammed

(National Secretary, PPP)
