Accra, May 7, GNA - The Medical and Dental Council on Monday said it was concerned about reports of "dismissal" of 91 house officers by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

It said it had considered all the relevant facts, including a presentation from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Administration and communications from the house officers together with an apology they had rendered and advised house officers to strictly adhere to the decisions and regulations of the council.

The council said in a statement by the Registrar, Dr E.K. Atikpui that it was mandatory for all doctors who qualified from the Medical and Dental Schools in Ghana to commence their housemanship training within two days after the release of the results of the final examination. "Any doctor who does not start the housemanship training within the mandatory period would be required to take the registration examination before he/she is provisionally registered."

The statement said all newly qualified doctors were to be inducted by the Medical and Dental Council and provisionally registered before they commenced their housemanship training.

"The period of housemanship training starts after the induction and provisional registration with the council. Housemanship training done before induction and provisional registration would be considered null and void," it said, adding that the duration of housemanship training is two years.
