The Council of State has heaped praises on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

According to the Chairman, Nana Otuo Siriboe II, even the regular updates by way of nationwide broadcasts “really brought encouragement to the country”.

These came to light when the president met the Council at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, April 21.

It comes a day after the lockdown on some major cities in Ghana was withdrawn.

President Akufo-Addo had explained that he decided to lift the lockdown on Accra, Kumasi, Kasoa and Tema following the “constancy” of data churned out from the enhanced contact tracing and testing over the three-week period.

There has been mixed reaction over the decision to lift the lockdown as Ghana has so far confirmed 1,042 cases.

But Nana Otuo Siriboe II said President Akufo-Addo’s handling of the crisis is comparable to two-time former Prime Minister of the UK, Winston Churchill.

The Paramount Chief of Asante-Juaben Traditional Area observed that the unconscious messages sent by the attire donned by the president in his broadcasts were inspiring.

“Your regular broadcasts have really brought a lot of encouragement to the country and as if by design or by accident, the clothes which you have been wearing have been depicting the mood of the country at those times,” he observed.

“These are reflections, even though unconsciously, of the spirit in you.

“Indeed, looking at one of the speeches, it reminded me of the way Churchill adopted the affairs of Britain during the 2nd World War and I said Mr President this has been very ‘Churchillian’ both in your delivery and in your comportment and in the depth and content of your speech.”

He added that there was no better time for Ghana to have a leader like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Council of State pledged support for the president, saying they had also been working behind the scenes in the fight against the pandemic.

President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the Council and explained the circumstances that informed the decision to lift the partial lockdown.

“But as I indicated in the statement that I made to the country, this is not an indication that we are letting our guards down. On the contrary, we believe we are in a stronger position to go after the virus because of the information that we have obtained over this three-week partial lockdown.”

He also expressed appreciation over the support he has received from Ghanaians.
